How do I deal with someone who tries to ‘strong arm’ me into accepting their offer
David Smith from London Asks:
How do I deal with someone who tries to ‘strong arm’ me into accepting their offer?
Answer:
The first thing to do is to understand what alternatives are available to both parties. If this person has an attractive alternative available and you don’t, you may have to move in their direction. On the other hand, if you have attractive alternatives available then you will not have to give in to their aggressive demands. You should let this person know that negotiation is about uncovering a zone of possible agreement that is based upon meeting the interests of all parties – it would be better to spend energy investigating potential common ground rather than using aggressive tactics which are more likely to just lead to a breakdown in both the discussions & the relationship.
